Kayaking 2011 in the tide race of Wales Anglesey
2011 I and my wife did a very exciting Kayak trip: We went to Wales, to paddle the tide race.
To be more specific, we went to Anglesey, and lived on Holyhead island. This trip had all ingredients,
both planned and unplanned. I learned a lot of things about paddling, and safety.
I also learned about some weaknesses I did not know I had.
The weather was not as good as we had hoped for. But it was not too bad either.
It was more windy than wanted (14 m/s almost all week). Anglesey is a good place to go to also for such weather,
since there are many different places to go.
Most days we could find a good spot where the wind conditions turned out to be good enough.
There is a lot to do more than kayaking on Holyhead island. There is a lot to see on land as well. The island is very beautiful, with a lot of nice houses, farm animals, and also some interesting kayak industries.
We were so lucky that two of the days we had a native guide, who turned out to be Phil from the "rough water handling" video and some other videos. A fantastic person, a terrific guide, an enormous kayaker, and really a big unexpected bonus on the trip.
- First day on Holyhead island, we fetched our kayaks at SKUK
- Second day on Holyhead island, we went out into the windy waters to learn the waves without too much tide race, but got a little more wind than expected
- Second day on Holyhead island afternoon trip in much calmer water at Trearddur bay.
We all agreed that we were interested in going back another year. We also agreed not to do it with the guide we had used. We all agreed he was absolutely not to be recommended. That due to his shortcomings as a guide and safety instructor, not for his lack of finding good kayaking spots, which he did well.
